My SB Phase 1 attempt unfortunately coincided with intense physical and mental fatigue, stress, and busyness. So, I gave myself permission to not continue with Phase 1 until I regain some equilibrium. One thing that I realized is that I allow myself to absorb far too much stress, anxiety, and frantic energy from stressed out [...]

Day 4/28

Sorry I’m a little late posting this….
Well, I didn’t simply fall off the no-refined-carbs bandwagon yesterday: I took an inelegant nosedive off. ::sigh::
Day 3/28

OK, today was the polar opposite of yesterday. Good grief.
Menu was virtually the same (Kefir, nuts, shrimp-edamame-avocado salad, nuts, turkey sausage, more shrimp salad, followed by 2 cups of steamed broccoli with some shredded cheddar). And there the similarities end.
Had a ridiculous energy slump at 3:30 PM (unlike yesterday). Caved and ate 90% of a [...]
South Beach, Phase 1, Day 2

Had a lifetime “first” today: I drank 64 oz of water. : ) YEAY me. Each day is so different….some days it’s so easy to eat healthy food and exercise, then the very next day it’s the hardest thing in the world. Go figure. This variability has taught me to stay humble and focused, even [...]
yummy food to take to work…
Posted in cooking, health on August 17, 2008 | 1 Comment »
One awesome thing about my job is that there is NOWHERE to eat anywhere within feasible walking or driving distance, and since I only have 30 minutes for lunch, bringing food is a must. I’m so grateful for the removal of any temptation to eat out (except for occasional staff meetings at Panera). However, it’s [...]

I have new yummy, cold-weather meal. It’s not terribly bad for me, but it’s definitely not the healthiest thing in the world. And it’s definitely not refined! :)
The main course: 2 slices of wheat bread, buttered (w/ Smart Balance) on 1 side. 4 slices of turkey bacon, crisply cooked. 2 slices of American Cheese (yep, [...]

OK, this sounds gross, but if you love veggies and legumes as much as I do (J-bird, you can stop reading now), you may like this snack/light lunch!
I want to use some of the canned goods in my pantry as they’ve been in there for some time. I was craving a snack and wanted to [...]

Here are the recipes I tried, along with my notes, in case you get into the Autumn baking spirit too!

I’m a person who is deeply affected by words. So, I decided to use words to help me reach my healthy-eating goals.
First Goal: Eat refined sugar only once per week.
This may not sound difficult to a normal person, but for me, I’m a borderline sugar addict. I can happily eat a serving of triple [...]
Pumpkin Smoothie Round-up

So, I tried to make a Pumpkin Chai Smoothie today, and it was drinkable, but nothing that I’d dare inflict on another human being. :) A Google search for Pumpkin Chai Smoothie recipes turned up nothing that I wanted (I’m determined to use REAL, Pure, Canned Pumpkin in my smoothies, not Pumpkin Syrup and not [...]

EFFORTLESSLY!
Well, if you have a Trader Joe’s that you can get to, it’s ridiculously easy. A friend of mine asked me to put together a list of some of my favorite high fiber foods. So, I thought I’d share it here!
These are all found at Trader Joe’s, except for the frozen yogurt and Triscuits
Greens [...]
food anxiety

Googling the term “food anxiety” yielded a remarkable article:
It’s lengthy, but well written and worth the 5-10 minutes it takes to get through it.
Here’s a teaser (emphasis mine):
Moral strictures on food tend to be heavily dependent on gender, with taboos against fatty foods strongest for women. Researchers have [...]
cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese!!!!!!!!

I LOVE cheese in virtually any form. It’s such an easy, inexpensive way to get protein into my diet, and there are so many lowfat, delicious versions.
However, for the last 2 years, I’ve severely restricted my cheese intake b/c I read that calcium inhibits the uptake of iron in one’s body, thereby exacerbating anemia (something [...]
wet-dog-wraps

OK, so they’re not actually called that…but whatever you do, DON’T BUY the “Carb Cutting Multi Grain Wraps” made by La Tortilla Factory. I bought them at Von’s 2 days ago to use for breakfast burritos, etc. They’re HUGE (the size of a large dinner plate), relatively soft, and only have 100 calories/wrap and have [...]
